La Catrina QuartetLa Catrina Quartet
La Catrina Quartet, which was featured as one of the ”next generation of classical stars” at Carnegie Hall, is back in Las Cruces, thanks to the efforts of the Las Cruces Friends of Chamber Music. La Catrina is spending a week-long residency at NMSU, working with both high school and university students, and giving a concert on Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the newly-named Atkinson Recital Hall in the NMSU Music Building. They came by the studios of KRWG-FM for their second in-studio interview with Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin. The popular ensemble first came to the area in November 2007. The musicians of La Catrina are violinists Daniel Vega-Albela and Blake Espy, violist Jorge Martinez and cellist Alan Daowz.

Chaffin & Raines InterviewChaffin & Raines Interview
From the folk legend of La Llorona to the paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe, composers find their inspiration from all sorts of sources. Composers Lon W. Chaffin and Justin Raines came by KRWG-FM to talk with Intermezzo host, Leora Zeitlin, about pieces they have written for NMSU’s tuba professor Dr. James Shearer and his annual ”Great American Tuba Show” concert. We hear clips from the pieces and how the composers found their ideas for them.

Joseph Schwantner & Manuel Barrueco InterviewJoseph Schwantner & Manuel Barrueco Interview
Two world-class musicians — composer Joseph Schwantner and guitarist Manuel Barrueco — were in town for concerts with the Las Cruces Symphony, and came by the studios of KRWG-FM to talk with Intermezzo host, Leora Zeitlin. Grammy-nominated Manuel Barrueco has been playing guitar since he was eight, and has a dazzlingly versatile repertoire, from Bach and Mozart, to Arvo Part, Astor Piazzolla and Paul Simon. Schwantner is only the second composer to be selected for the national program ”Ford Made in America,” and his piece, ”Chasing Light,” will get its Mountain Premiere here in Las Cruces.

THIS WEEK IN PUBLIC ARTS

 Alf Clausen Don Giovanni
A new recording of "Don Giovanni," released by conductor and music specialist, Rene Jacobs, returns to opera's roots by featuring an orchestra approximating the size and standards of Mozart's Day. While the size of the orchestra is impressive, Jacobs has forsaken deluxe casting for lesser-known singers expertly trained in vocal and early-music performance.
