Ed PiasA tragic love story unfolds in Verdi’s “La Traviata,” which opens the El Paso Opera season this weekend. Performances are Thursday and Saturday nights (Oct. 12 and 14, 2006) at 7:30 p.m., at the newly-renovated Plaza Theatre.

Leora Zeitlin, host of Intermezzo, interviews Prentice Loftin, Director of the El Paso Opera about the production. You can listen to the interview right now, and hear three of the most famous arias. All the selections are with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under the direction of James Levine:

  1. “Libiamo ne’lieti calici,” sung by Luciano Pavarotti and Cheryl Studer & the Metropolitan Opera Chorus (Deutsche Gramophon $437726)
  2. “Sempre libera,” sung by Luciano Pavarotti and Cheryl Studer (Deutsche Gramophon 435797)
  3. A couple of minutes of the final scene, “Prendi, quest’e l’immagine,” sung by Studer, Pavarotti, Juan Pons, Sondra Kelly and Julien Robbins (Deutsche Gramophon 435797).
