Ed PiasFrame drums have been played since Biblical times throughout much of the world--from Asia through the Middle East, Europe, Africa and in the Americas. One can hear them in Medieval music, Renaissance music, and numerous contemporary works, as well as in many "world" and "crossover" ensembles and pieces. Master frame drummer Ed Pias came to the studios of KRWG-FM to give an overview of frame drums, demonstrate the different sounds and rhythmic traditions they encompass, and play music with a few of his many drums. Ed offers insights into the differences between several drums in the tambourine family (riq, kanjira, tamborello, and pandeiretta), and frame drums with out "jingles" (daf, tar, bodhran, and bendir). And he and Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin also listen to the frame drums in:
  1. Medieval anonymous composer, "Saltarello and Trotto," performed by Instapitta (LEMS 8016)
  2. Ali Jihad Racy, "Ecstasy," performed by Racy on nay, the Kronos Quartet, and Souhail Kaspar on tar (Nonesuch 79490)
  3. short excerpt from Glen Velez and students performing Velez' "Doctrine of Signatures" (CMP 54).
