When we say "classical music," we may mean
Bach or
Beethoven or even
Stravinsky, but in India, the words denote a very different kind of music. In the first of a series of occasional programs devoted to "classical" music from other cultures, Intermezzo host Leora Zeitlin spends an hour with Indian drummer
Ed Pias to explore Indian classical music. Ed plays on his "pakhawaj," demonstrating some of the styles and techniques, and they listen to several performers on cd as well:
- U. Srinivas performs "Ennathavam" on mandolin, with a violinist, in "Carnatic" Indian classical style;
- Zia Mohiuddin Dagar performs excerpts from "Raga Yaman" on the rudra
vina in "Hindustani" classical style (Nimbus Records 5276);
- Excerpt from "Ganesh Paran" performed by Raja Chatrapati Singh on pakhawaj;
- Excerpt from "Chautal" performed by Wasifuddin Dagar (vocal) and Mohan Shyam Sharma on pakhawaj.
