Memphis Hang Interview Part 2
Mostly we talk about the music in this 2-part interview with jazz dynamos Charlie Wood, Billy Gibson and Jim Shearer, but we also touch on what IS a Hammond B-3 (it’s a kind of organ, and Wood plays it on several of the tracks), the difference between a chromatic and diatonic harmonica (listen to find out), and the stories behind the tunes. All musical selections below except #3 are from "The Memphis Hang," featuring Jim Shearer, Charlie Wood and Billy Gibson (Summit #502):
1.) "Well, You Needn’t," by Thelonious Monk, lyrics by Mike Ferro, arr. by Jim Shearer & Charlie Wood;
2.) "Mound Bayou," by Leonard Feathre, lyrics by Andy Razaf;
3.) "Beale Street Blues," by W.C. Handy (from "Lucky," Charlie Wood’s cd on the Inside Sounds label);
4.) The Memphis Hang," by Bob Leathermon; arr. by Jim Shearer.
