Chatman's Concerto
There's a long tradition in music of composers writing works for their friends, and those friends performing it on the stage. The tradition continues in Las Cruces this week when composer Stephen Chatman, the Verdehr Duo, conductor Lonnie Klein and the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra all team up for the world premiere of Chatman's new Concerto for Clarinet and Violin. Lonnie Klein studied clarinet with Else Ludewig-Verdehr as a student, and Chatman has been friends with her and her violinist husband, Walter, for years. Walter Verdehr, Stephen Chatman and Lonnie Klein all joined "Intermezzo" host Leora Zeitlin in the KRWG-FM studios to talk about Chatman's music, the Verdehr's phenomenal history of commissioning hundreds of scores, their lives as performers, and the music of Alan Hovhaness, whose "Mysterious Mountain" symphony is also on the program.

Musical selections in the interview
(from cds) include:

1.) Stephen Chatman, "Trio." Performed by the Verdehr Trio (Crystal cd #946)
2.) Alan Hovhanness, "Lake Samish," movements 2 and 3. Performed by the Verdehr Trio (Crystal cd#741).
